The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has organized a
three-day workshop for “Strategic Planning & Leadership Excellence” for
senior university leaders from the Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the National Institute of Banking and Finance
(NIBAF) in Rawalpindi. The initiative seeks to build a stronger institutional
leadership and governance, strategic planning, institutional financial
sustainability and integration of emerging technologies, such as Artificial
Intelligence (AI) with the higher education sector of Pakistan.
The workshop is undertaken as part of HEC's ongoing
initiatives of developing leadership in higher education institutions and
providing skills for university administrators to face the challenges of the
times in the academic, administrative and economic aspects. As the national
centre for capacity building and professional development in higher education,
NAHE has been vigorously running leadership and governance programs to enhance
institutional effectiveness nationwide.
Dr. Noor Amna Malik, Managing Director NAHE, emphasized at
the first session the vision of HEC to empower university leadership through
the responsible utilization of Artificial Intelligence, collaboration, quality
assurance and financial governance, and strategic planning. She explained that
leadership is crucial in developing resilient institutions that are able to
keep pace with the rapid pace of technological development, evolving
educational needs and competitiveness in the world.
The three-day program features interactive sessions, expert
discussions, and practical exercises focusing on strategic management,
governance reforms, institutional sustainability, AI integration, financial
planning, and leadership excellence. The participants are expected to share
their experiences, discuss common problems and challenges and share innovative
solutions on how to enhance institutional performance and academic quality.
This has been the subject of several similar HEC-NAHE leadership projects aimed
at enhancing decision making, policy making, accountability, research,
innovation and collaboration with stakeholders in universities.
The workshop is timely as the higher education sector in
Pakistan is under growing pressure to become more financially sustainable,
digital and research intensive, as well as quality assured. The educators are
being invited to make evidence-informed decisions, to innovate and link
institutional decisions to national development targets. In the recent
discussions held among the leaders of the universities, emphasis has been laid
on the importance of Artificial Intelligence, new technologies,
entrepreneurship and better linkages between industry and academia.
The workshop aims to foster inter-regional cooperation
between AJK, GB, KP and Rawalpindi and to share best practices in University
Governance. They should come up with tangible solutions that can assist their
institution in becoming more effective, improving academic excellence, and
improving institutional long-term sustainability.
HEC-NAHE's efforts are welcomed by the Islamabad Center for
Peace and Education (ICEP) and leadership development is considered as one of
the key factors to improve the higher education system in Pakistan. As the
world evolves and faces a host of technological advancements, economic
downturns and fluctuating needs from a changing workforce, visionary leaders
are needed for universities to withstand complex challenges while maintaining
top-tier academic quality.
Strategic planning, financial sustainability, governance and
Artificial Intelligence are among the topics included in the workshop agenda, a
reflection of the challenges existing in the higher education sector today, in
the opinion of ICEP. It is important to have good university leadership not
only for enhancing the performance of the university, but also to promote
innovation, research culture, social responsibility and national development.
The Center also emphasizes that the gathering of senior academic leaders from all across Pakistan can be a significant platform for collaboration, learning from one another, and sharing best practices. These can contribute to closing the regional gap, building institutional resilience and fostering a culture of continuous improvement in the higher education sector. ICEP congratulates HEC and NAHE on the investment in the professional development of university leaders and calls upon them to support other similar initiatives to keep Pakistan's universities competitive, innovative and relevant to needs of the 21st century.
