Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan held a formal function at Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB), University of the Punjab, to celebrate the Pakistani scientists who have made an impact at an international level by being added to the list of the Top 2% Scientists of the World 2025 published by Stanford University and the scientists who received the National Research Program for Universities (NRPU) research grants.
A panel of renowned HE academics, researchers and senior officials joined the event. It acknowledged that Pakistan was making strides towards its contribution in the field of scientific research globally including molecular biology, biotechnology, computer science, environmental sciences, engineering etc. By having scholars from Pakistan in the Stanford-Elsevier database, it shows that they have continued to produce high quality research and impact on the research. It is noticed that the presence of Pakistani scholars in the Stanford-Elsevier database indicates their research activity and impact in international academic standards.
The HEC says that the researchers who received the award are from a wide cross-section of universities and research institutions in the public sector. They are recognized according to several bibliometric indicators such as the number of citations, h-index, and scientific influence. It is considered as one of the most complete global lists of research scientists available for each individual scientist to assess his or her research output by discipline.
During the ceremony, the leadership of HEC highlighted the need to enhance the research ecosystem of Pakistan by providing targeted funding, institutional support, and international collaboration. The NRPU grant recipients were also recognized for their support and contributions in the advancement of innovative research projects that help address national and international challenges. The event at CEMB highlighted the contribution of the Higher Education Institutions of Pakistan in building the scientific excellence and development through innovations. This reflected HEC's dedication to supporting research activities and promoting exceptional and world-class research by young scholars.
The event ended with a pledge to remain committed to researchers and their efforts for improving the visibility of Pakistan in international academic ranking and scientific circles.
